Chekhov’s short story: genre-forming role of the identity crisis

Abstract. In the article the “short story” is considered not as a narrative text with a small volume, but as a genre’s tradition, that could have scientific description. It formed in Chekhov’s works which had an impact on the world literature. Chekhov’s mature years stories as post-novel phenomenon of literary writing are distinguished by a special narrative strategy that contaminates the strategy of the anecdote and parable. The situation of the identity crisis of main character (as bifurcation point) acquires in these works the invariant significance of the genre-forming moment.

Key words: genre tradition, short story, Chekhov, post-novel genres, narrative identity, crisis.

Chechov: between realism and decadance

Abstract. The article explores the dialogue between Anton Chekhov and decadent culture. It is argued that the ambiguity of Chekhov’s position between realism and symbolism follows from the general setting of his texts, where leading principle is uncertainty. On the example of “The Story of the Unknown Man” and “The Black Monk” author shows that Chekhov’s negative uncertainty correlates with the notion of “decay” than the decadent positive uncertainty proclaimed by the essence of things.

Key words: A.P. Chekhov; realism; decadence; symbolism; uncertainty.

Some observations on the semiotics of sorrow and anxiety in the Russian culture on the eve of the 20th century

Abstract. This article explores the semiotic perspective of the functioning of such signifiers as “sorrow” and “anxiety” in the Russian literature of the late 19th – early 20th centuries. It is suggested that the “world-pain” formula itself  as an equivalent of the German “Weltschmerz” formed in the Russian culture by analogy with the “civil grief” that had appeared earlier. In this regard I observe the further semantic differentiation of these two formulas and the way in which they are divided into various discourses.

Key words: semiotics, signifier, metasignifier, sorrow, anxiety, world-pain, civil grief, Weltschmerz, Russian culture
